The WOCE Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) DAC was located at the Centre IRD de Brest (former Orstom) and charged with assembling all the Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) observations collected since 1990 in the course of the WOCE programme (oceanographic cruises, observational networks).

Initially the data archived at the SSS DAC came primarily from observations made by merchant ships (VOS) of the network administered by IRD (442,559 observations). This data was supplemented by data extracted from the 1998 NODC Atlas (56,951 observations).

The quality control procedures applied where under the PI's responsibility. Due to the diversity of data sources and to the various quality control levels applied, the data files submitted by the PI's to the DAC have been processed apart from the NODC Atlas data.

The data have been formated in close cooperation with IFREMER as one of the activities of the CORIOLIS Data Centre hyperlink.

The table below shows the total observations as well as division between oceans extracted from the 1998 NODC Atlas.
