Regions are systematically indicated by keywords with a maximum of 5 characters.

The 3 major basins are titled ATL,IND,PAC. They may each take another character S,N,T for south, north and tropical. A final character can distinguish E and W. (Note E and W must be preceded by S, T, or N). To identify the east Pacific generally requires 3 keywords, PACNE,PACTE, and PACSE.
The ANTarctic takes ATL,IND, or PAC as its next 3 characters.
The ATLantic has additional possibilities,ATLNNE and ATLNNW denoting the northern basins in the Norwegian and Labrador Seas.
The ARCtic has one subsidiary definition ARCEUR for the European Arctic.

The MEDiterranean exceptionally takes E and W as its 4 th character.

WOCE keywords are AIMS,FIELDW,UNPUBW, and MODELW

REFereed arcticles, additional UNPUBlished articles, and unpublished papers with MODELling content are so labelled.
