Ocean Data View (mp) - Runtime Environment

The eWOCE disk contains a runtime environment for version 1.2 of the multi-platform Ocean Data View software. This runtime environment will allow you to run ODV on any of the supported platforms without the need to install the software first.

If you decide to install ODV on your computer, click here for further instructions.

To run ODV from the runtime environment on this disk perform steps 1-3 below:

(1) Using the usual methods for starting an application on your system, run one of the executable files below...

Executable

Platform

<DVD>/ewoce/odv_run/bin_w32/odvmp.exe

Windows 9x, Me, NT, 2000, or XP

<DVD>/ewoce/odv_run/bin_linux-i386/odvmp

Linux (Suse 7.2 or higher, RedHat 7.3 or higher, other equivalents)

<DVD>/ewoce/odv_run/bin_solaris-sparc/odvmp

Solaris 8 or higher

<DVD>/ewoce/odv_run/bin_irix6.5-mips/odvmp

Irix 6.5 or higher

<DVD>/ewoce/odv_run/bin_macx/odvmp

Mac OS 10.1 or higher

where <DVD> represents the drive or mount-point of your DVD.

(2) When ODV starts for the first time you have to provide the following "Quick-Installation" information.

Note that some entries are provided by ODV automatically and need not be changed.

where <DVD> represents the drive or mount-point of your DVD. This completes the quick installation procedure. ODV should run normally (although a bit slower compared to running it from a normal installation), and a re-specification of the quick-installation information should only be required, if you use a different run-time environment.

(3) When ODV runs for the first time you may need to customize some settings:

Depending on your system's screen resolution and general font-size settings, ODV will determine default fonts which will be used for the ODV graphics window, text window, dialog boxes and popup windows. You can override these default settings via "Configuration>General Settings>Font". Increase the value for f, if you want larger text and axis annotations in the graphics window; decrease f otherwise. Note that some exotic fonts might not be supported in ODV's PostScript output. Modify the "Text Window>Font Size" entry to adjust the font size used for ODV's text window, dialog boxes and popup windows.

Ocean Data View requires a web browser for the display of the ODV help file, and it requires a text-viewer/text-editor for viewing .info, .log or other text files. ODV will try to locate suitable programs on your system automatically. You can use "Configuration>General Settings>Program Locations" to override these default settings and to specify the full path-names of your favorite browser and text viewer manually. See the following table for possible choices:

Using Ocean Data View

You invoke ODV's functionality through the main menu (near the top of the ODV window) or via popup menus that you activate by clicking the right mouse button (under Mac OS X  press and hold down the Alt-key while clicking the mouse). Note that you get different popup menus depending on the mouse position at the time of the click. You select stations or samples by simply clicking on them with the left mouse button. You plot property/property plots of one or more stations by double-clicking on the respective stations. You plot scatter-plots, sections and surfaces by switching to SCATTER, SECTION or SURFACE mode and double-clicking on the station map. Note that a section or iso-surface variables have to be defined for a plot to appear. Produce hardcopies of your plots using the Print or Save As options (PostScript, PNG, JPG).

For more information on the Ocean Data View software see the ODV User's Guide or invoke the ODV help system by pressing F1.

ODV is still under development, and it is likely that at the time when this disk is distributed, more recent software versions or versions for more platforms are available.  Please visit the ODV web page for latest information.
